Glock has changed a lot in 35 years. Some changes I've welcomed (drop-free mags).
Some I've been less enthusiastic about (finger grooves).
I have tested out the Gen 6, and here is a breakdown (without the marketing language) of what Glock actually changed in their Generation 6 pistol:
Glock Generation 1 to 6
The grip texture is new, and features a palm-swell. RTF-6 is more aggressive than Gen 5, but different in character from the older RTF-2 that some of you will remember. I found it surprising that the G19 feels considerably more aggressive than the G17,
The trigger has a flat face on the shoe, which changes the leverage geometry and where your finger sits at the break. It offers a shorter ‘reach’ and should suit more people.
The trigger guard undercut is the most aggressive Glock has ever put on a factory pistol — it allows a higher grip, for better recoil management. I’m likely to still tweak this a bit, but it’s close to what I have done to my Glock pistols for years.
The beavertail is extended. Never been an issue in my life, but I have seen the ‘snake-bite’ due to an improper grip technique.
And the slide is Optic Ready System (ORS). ORS is a direct mounting cut for a wide range of red dots, no adapter plate required – simpler than the previous Modular Optical System (MOS).
There are a few internal changes too, nothing radical. But take a look at your brass after shooting and see the ring left by the stepped chamber.
What didn't change: The reliability. The Glock action. The mags. The holsters.
Glock Gen 6 Pistol
Here's my verdict on the Glock Gen 6 - I liked it more than I expected to.
Here is why: The trigger is better. The flat face changes the feel at the break in a way that's immediately noticeable. The undercut gives you a higher grip than any factory Glock I've shot, and that matters — less muzzle flip, faster second shot. The RTF-6 texture is aggressive without being unpleasant. It's the most ergonomically refined Glock they've ever built.
Do I think it replaces the Gen 1 in my affections? No. But that's a personal thing — I'm a traditionalist and I know it. What I can tell you is that if I were recommending a Glock to a sport shooter or someone buying for self-defence today, I would recommend the Gen 6 without hesitation.
